Prof. Netland tenured and promoted to Full Professor

In 2016 Prof. Netland joined ETH Zurich and D-MTEC as Tenure Track Assistant Professor. Seven years later, he not only made tenure—he was also promoted directly to Full Professor! We celebrate and congratulate.

Torbjörn

Prof. Netland joined ETH Zurich in September 2016 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. During his time as Head of Chair of Production and Operations Management (POM), he has led a very successful group, evidenced by top publications, numerous teaching and research awards, and successful post-ETH careers for his staff. Ex-POMers have moved on to top academic institutions like HEC Montreal and the University of Cologne, consultancies like McKinsey, industrial firms like Stadler and M-Industrie, and non-governmental institutions like UNCTAD in Geneve, or founded their own companies like EthonAI.

Prof. Netland starts his Full Professorship on June 1, 2023. The direct promotion from Assistant to Full Professor is a rare event at the two Swiss federal institutes of technology, ETH Zurich and EPFL. According to the official announcements, less than 3% of the successfully tenured Assistant Professors were promoted to Full in the past five years (only 2 of 76 promotions from Jan 2019-April 2023).

We at the Chair of Production and Operations Management are thrilled and proud. We congratulate Torbjørn on his fantastic achievement and look forward to the many years ahead.

The official announcement is available here.
